Regional Architecture Done Right!

Updated: Oct 30, 2019

Cellar Door | Henschke

Visiting the rolling green manicured hills of the Barossa Valley, it is easy to forget we are in country South Australia. The landscape is a far cry from the overgrown wild bush that it typical of the Aussie countryside found an hour’s drive in any direction from our major cities.

Perched amongst the landscape is the newly renovated Henchke Cellars. The old industrial style stables has been elegantly transformed by local regional architects JBG Architects, into a fitting residence for the Henchke label. The old bricks frame every opening whilst the stone, with the South Australian signature exaggerated mortar joints, form a rustic and haphazard wall surface inside and out. Contrasted with the new solid steel framed windows, doors, signage, lighting and roof features they act as a seamless insertion in to the old structure.

Internally the exposed timber roof gables and floor boards add warmth that is as welcoming as the staff who are eager to share the history that is Henchke since 1860. Many testaments to its history line the walls with historic images and a devoted underground bunker gallery of relics that have been found and preserved onsite. It is quintessential regional style Barossa Valley architecture matched only by the outstanding wine on offer.
